During my two years at BYG I have developed UI skills which have helped bring our courses to life. Using minimal text to draw attention to important information and interactive elements to stop the learner fatigue, I have learnt simple but effective techniques which can be developed for many different clients and brands.

How can we talk about our feelings? This animation explores the ways we can begin to open up about our feelings to those around us. Rhiannon and the instructional designer worked together closely on the script and designs to ensure it felt natural and communicated the skills every day people can use to help influence their conversations.

This animation was created as a reflective piece to help people consider their own work-life balance. The idea was designed to reflect life, using a bike metaphor symbolising the chaotic busy roads, the uphill battle and the calm straight paths. This style was created to be whimsical and beautiful to allow the user to reflect and calm their emotions.

The brief:
Create Proof of Concept for an immersive VR world out of a specific theme.

Inspiration
Kayaking on a British canal. Got me thinking... this could be a really beautiful VR experience.

Watching inside out. The core beliefs scene. I loved the dark space in contrast to the beams of glowing light. The reflections in the water gave it such a mystical feel.
Reading about dyslexia, made me realise how little we know about learning difficulties and neurodivergence.
World ideas

World ideas
I’m thinking of an educational piece for a museum.
Education for all age groups.
The aim is to create a VR experience with a lasting impression through:
-
Lighting
-
Sound
-
Interactivity
-
Visuals
Perhaps a real boat that the audience can climb into to make the experience 4D.
Feelings I want to ignite:
An immersive experience, learner is guided down a river with learning displayed in VO, and visuals.
-
Curiousity
-
Inquisitive
-
Calm
-
Reflective
Focusing on neurodivergence because:
I have personal experience
-
Better understanding of societies capabilities helps in all areas of life.
-
The conversation is very current.
The grand idea
An immersive and mystical journey to understand neurodivergent minds. Learn about Dyslexia and how the dyslexic mind sees the world.
The journey will take the user on a boat ride, where they can enjoy the calming affects of atmospheric music, whilst visual aids and voice over contextualise theories which combat misconceptions related to the learning difficulty.

User journey

The user walks into a intimate silent dark room. A spotlight is cast above a boat enticing the user to get in. The VR headset hangs from the ceiling ready to be placed on.

The boat moves forward slowly. Bright glowing orbs begin to appear on screen increasing in size and number.
VO: Dyslexia has often been seen as a disadvantage. However you might not know of the superpowers that dyslexia inhibits.

With the head set on the user experiences the scene in pitch black, just the sound of the boat bobbing can be heard. Small falling specs of purple dust can be seen.

The glowing orbs transforms into a cube similar to Barcelona’s firework show here the orbs will morph into different shapes whilst the VO explains further.
VO: Individuals with dyslexia have fantastic spacial awareness, they are able to see with their minds eye spaces and environments with ease.

Slowly the scene fades in, and the user can see themselves sat in the VR boat, purple and pink ripples surround the boat. And stem 1 from the music begins to play as the boat begins moving forward.

The orbs transform into a whale which swims around the entire world with grace, being a mystical skeptical to admire.

Please bare in mind the voice over is intended to give an idea of content, not an accurate portrayal.

Sound
The sound design in this experience is imperative to create the mystical and calm environment for learning.
The user should step into the world and instantly feel a sense of wonder and intrigue.
To achieve this, the first sound the user will hear is the sound of the boat. As the scene focuses into full view, stem 1 from Majestic Flights will fade in creating a feeling of optimism.
Finally, as the boat begins its journey the full track of Majetic Flights will play. The music will be low volume as the voice over will take emphasis.
Art direction
The art direction of the environment will feel whimsical, calm and atmospheric. Glowing obrs, sparkly water, and colourful ripples will add a magical feel to the experience.

Prototype
Find a link to my finished prototype here, I’m quite happy with how it’s turned out, despite it’s very basic approach I think it represents the idea pretty well.
With more time i’d have made the boat move forward, with glowing ripples. Water sound effects, and i’d make the glowing particles form shapes and move across the scene.
